Distribution of an Image of Sacred George In old Belorussian Icon-painting

Abstracts:

For studying the archival material collected during expeditions in 1970-90 years in cult establishments of Belarus, the structure of a database “Icona” on the basis FoxPro was developed. Using opportunities FoxPro, we study the distribution of iconographic plots on the territory of Belarus.

Saint George is one of the most popular saints in Belarus. As for the amount of icons with his image George takes the fifth place, it is inferior only to the Mother of God, Christ, Nicolas and Michael. In general, about 400 icons with George''''s image (2,4 % of all icons) is registered on Belarus. The regional distribution is rather even the biggest amount is observed in the Grodno and Gomel regions (2,9 % each), the least amount is in Vitebsk (1,9 %) and in Mogilyow (1,5 %) regions.

According to the time of creation the basic of icons belongs to second half of 19th centuries. Icons of the 17th and 18th centuries make about 6%. In the report iconographic features of the most ancient icons and their images will be considered.
